PLSO The Oregon Surveyor January/February 2020

14 2020 Annual Conference: Award Winners Brian Portwood has taken it upon himself to research, summa- rize, discuss and explain the details of the historical land rights cases that have been adjudicated in the State of Oregon. These cases lay the foundation for boundary law establishment in our state, including many layers of information that today’s and future surveyors will need to review, understand and in many cases follow to execute proper boundary survey work. Brian has not only undertaken this task in a series of books cover- ing historical periods, but he has done this mountain of work free of charge, all proceeds from the book being devoted to the PLSO Education and Scholarship fund for the future gen- eration of surveyors. If one is to measure a career in surveying by the footsteps that are left for the next generation to follow, Brian’s work and legacy, found in these books, will assist the both the current generation and future generation of survey- ors for decades to come. This type of selfless commitment to the profession and support to PLSO is worthy of our highest honor and most humbling praise. Brian’s distinguished service should be recognized and commended. The Honorary Service Award Brian Portwood, PLS The Contagious Attitude Award Tim Fassbender Tim Fassbender was awarded two richly deserved honors this year. The first, for getting people motivated to work on the Stra- tegic Plan, and the second for serving as our moderator and making it happen. Tim delivers a contagious sense of motiva- tion, leading the Strategic Plan Update process by selecting three key areas of the original 2002 plan that have been identified as a priority by the 2019 PLSO Board of Directors. He planned and coordinated a special Strategic Plan meeting in September that included the Board, Committee Members and other key mem- bers of the professional community. Discussion touched upon 1) Increasing Membership 2) Promoting the Profession, and 3) Improving Leadership with our organization. Based on the round tables discussed, his Strategic Planning Report outlined strategies and priorities in developing a plan for providing value and increasing membership, promoting the profession by con- tinuing our education, outreach and promotional activities and improving leadership strategies. The Board voted to approve moving the Strategic Plan Update forward to implement the plan as a policy goal for the 2020 year. Implementation of this plan update and periodic updating of the plan in the future will help strengthen and increase the viability of our organization. Is it any wonder, that Mr. Tim Fassbender was also awarded as the 2019 Surveyor of the Year? Vol. 43, No. 1 The Oregon Surveyor |
