18 Vol. 41, No. 3 The Oregon Surveyor | Answer The Lost Surveyor This issue of the Lost Surveyor is not about a surveyor fromour past, but about someone who greatly influenced our lives as Oregonians and how we do our jobs as surveyors, especially in the land de- velopment world. Among many others, Governor Tom McCall signed the bottle bill, public ownership of beaches and the Oregon Land Use Planning Laws. Tom McCall was also one of the founders of SOLV (Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism) which has cleaned millions of pounds of trash from our beaches and communi- ties. McCall’s influence in the state can be seen far and wide, but of course land use planning is something we all navigate as surveying professionals. A quote he is most known for happened during an in- terview with CBS news where he stated in reference to tourists coming to Ore- gon; “Come visit us again and again. This is a state of excitement. But for heaven’s sake, don’t come here to live.” Based on traffic and the pace of development, I don’t think people listened. Tom McCall left a lasting legacy on the state and has many places named in his honor. One of these places is the Tom McCall Nature Preserve in Wasco Coun- ty at Rowena Crest. Heading east from
