11 Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon | www.plso.org PLSO Conference This year, I ampleased to announce that two of our members have been chosen for Life Membership. The PLSO bylaws state: Life membership status shall be granted only in recognition of distin- guished service to this Corporation and to the profession. Nominees must have satisfied all the following minimum requirements to qualify for Life Membership: 1. Career long service to the profession and PLSO. 2. Served as a Chapter Officer or on a committee. 3. Is currently and has been a Corporate Member of PLSO for ten years prior to nomination. 4. Approval vote by two-thirds of the Board of Directors by secret ballot. These two individuals were both nominated by a handful of their peers. They have each held multiple positions within PLSO, both serving on multiple committees, as chapter officers, and as PLSO Board Chairman. It is my privilege to present PLSO Life Membership to Herb Farber and Greg Crites. Lifetime Membership Herb Farber Greg Crites Article of the Year Brian Portwood The article of the year is an award given to the author of the best article that has been published in the Oregon Surveyor within the last year. There were many great articles in the Oregon Surveyor this year. There were several that could have won this award which demonstrates just how deserving this year’s winner really is. This author regularly contributes articles to be pub- lished both regionally and nationally and as the nomination said are “well written with scholar- ly research involving countless hours of effort, all for the edification of our membership with- out regard for any personal acknowledgement.” Fortunately, we have this award, so we can ac- knowledge the effort put forth. So, with that, the Article of the Year award for “ The Nooksack Case ” is presented to Brian Portwood. This award is “to give recognition to an Associate or Special member of PLSO who has done exem- plary work and demonstrates professionalism during the year.” The nomination for this person says “they are soon to be a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Oregon. In addition to their full-time job as sur- vey technician, they are serving as a Lieutenant in the Navy Reserves which requires they spend an average of one weekend a month at a Naval base in Washington State. This person also finds time to serve as the Secretary of the Willamette Chapter, and as the Vice-Chair of the Oregon Young Surveyor’s Network. Their sense of hu- mor, character and leadership will benefit PLSO and our profession for years to come.” If all those very specific details weren’t enough to give it away, this year’s Associate of the Year is Leo Litowich.
