22 Answer The Oregon Surveyor | Vol. 40, No. 5 The Lost Surveyor Cape Kiwanda located between Pacific City and Tierra Del Mar on the Oregon Coast was once known as Sand Cape. According to the Oregon Book of Geographic names Kiwanda is said to mean “wind mountain,” however, the book goes on to state that according to John W. Meldrum of Oregon City and a former Surveyor General of Oregon, the name originates from a Nestucca Indian Chief. The haystack rock which is offshore and approximately one half mile south of the cape is noted on some maps as Chief Kiawanda Rock which would seem to support the statements of John W. Meldrum (the change in spelling is correct). According to the GLO plat for T4S R11W, Tillamook County, this same area (Section 13) was surveyed by Henry Meldrum in 1879. Cape Kiwanda which is part of the Three Capes Scenic Route and the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, was the focus of much media attention last summer when vandals destroyed the notable rock formation called the Duckbill. The vandals were never caught even though video of the act of destruction circulated widely.
