SPEAKER: John Stahl 1:00–2:30 pm The Original Survey of the International Boundary: Summit of the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Georgia SPEAKER: Denny DeMeyer Follow the activities of the Joint U.S & British Boundary Commissions to mark the boundary between 1857 and 1862. You will learn about the chief players on both commissions and follow in the footsteps of the chief astronomers and surveyors, surveyors and assistant surveyors in their eorts to establish the astronomic 49th Parallel of North Latitude. Denny will explain their surveying methods using Zenith Telescopes, Meridian Transits, chronometers and other surveying equipment, while traversing some of the most inhospitable terrain in North America. Information presented has been gathered from State and National Archives, Library of Congress, BC Provincial Museum and England. Denny has spent over 30 years researching ocial reports, journals, diaries, photos, pictures and letters home by both the U.S. and British participants. We will also touch upon the retracement of the boundary by a joint Canada–U.S. Commission between 1901 and 1908 and problems with the international boundary today. Learning how to prepare and protect your family, home and business starts by attending this free presentation. Being able to recover quickly from a catastrophic event is a choice that needs to be made before the event.
