Depression, anxiety, burnout and substance use disorder are all, at least partially, attributed to isolation. Many dentists operate in small offices. They often have the burden of caring for the public without the benefit of the camaraderie of fellow professionals. One out of every ten individuals will suffer from a substance use disorder, and dentists are no different. For years, health care professionals have suffered in silence, but there is hope… and help. The Pennsylvania Physicians’ Health Program (PHP) has been in operation for more than 30 years. Since 1997, our services have been available to and have aided hundreds of dentists with psychological, behavioral and substance use problems. We assist health care practitioners in getting evaluations, direct them to treatment when necessary and monitor them in recovery. The most rewarding of our functions is advocating for dentists to assist them in their personal and professional lives. Burnout, which is common for dental professionals, often leads to mental health or addiction issues. It is important to know the signs and symptoms of substance use disorder and severe mental health conditions. The process of getting help starts with a phone call. The professional can call us or they may be referred by family, friends, co-workers, employers or their licensing board. After discussing the case, the entire staff at the PHP determines the appropriate level of evaluation. We provide a choice of sites so the participant has an opportunity to participate in the process.
