OTA member Airport Drayage Co. planned and prepped to weather the storm, but, as they say, you can’t fight Mother Nature. Ice + Tree + Gravity— never a good combination. Chaining Up Travel around the state was certainly problematic. Truck drivers who frequently travel through the Cascades or the Siskiyou Summit are more familiar with winter travel and are more adept at when and how to put chains on. ODOT reported that they got pushback from some truck drivers (likely from out of state) about using chains. While chain laws can change from state-to-state, Oregon’s is pretty clear: Captain of the Ship Several years ago, before ODOT’s Motor Carrier Transportation Division (MCTD) was the Commerce and Compliance Division (CCD) and before then MCTD Administrator Gregg Dal Ponte joined OTA as our Director of Regulatory Compliance, ODOT distributed information about how truck drivers are ultimately the captains of their own ships when it comes to determining how or if they operate during inclement weather.
