To put a finer point on it, this is your chance to make a difference in ways which were previously impossible. While working in the election trenches, I learned a crucial lesson about Oregon politics: Republicans own the air and Democrats dominate the ground. In other words, in a typical election cycle, Republicans can rely on significant financial contributions allowing for robust mail campaigns, digital media, and mainstream television and radio advertisements. They can capture the “air game” and effectively communicate with voters. At the same time, Democrats tend to put Republicans to shame with the amount of boots-on-the ground, door- to-door support they can provide to candidates through their extensive network of unions, educators, youth organizers, and advocacy organizations. But with social distancing mandates and a general apprehension of in-person contact at voter’s doorsteps, Democrats are faced with a significantly diminished “ground game” coming into November. Both sides are acutely aware of this dynamic, and Democrats will be campaigning aggressively to account for this lost door-to-door contact and to make up the difference through the airwaves. 2020 is not the year to sit back and watch.
