Cascades East Family Medicine Residency marks its 21st year and welcomes its next class of residents. The program is sponsored by both OHSU and Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls. It has enjoyed great success in meeting the education needs for GME students passionate about serving in rural communities and in building up its primary care base in Klamath Falls and neighboring frontier communities. The newly formed GME Rural Primary Care Consortium was kick-started by a $506,000 grant from Moda Health and the Oregon Educators Benefits Board this past year. Faculty at OHSU and COMPNorthwest co-chair the steering committee for the group, which will hold its first informational meetings with key health care stakeholders around the state this spring. According to the AAMC, 70% of physicians who completed school and GME in Oregon end up staying here. That's why we need to focus on how we can fund more residency programs within the state of Oregon. Unified voice for medicine in Oregon As the unified voice for medicine in Oregon, we have clout where it counts— with lawmakers and policy leaders. It’s always a proud moment for me to take part in our direct outreach efforts to Congress and the AMA. I hope you’ll plan to share your voice with your association by taking part in our General Membership meeting on April 25, 2015. It’s a great opportunity to find connections and shared purpose as we build our voice together for better medicine in Oregon.
