Yet, recruiting and retaining the workforce required to provide care for aging Oregonians is a major challenge. The sector must cultivate a pipeline of talent as demand for long term care services and supports grows. Providers in rural Oregon face particularly acute challenges as those populations are aging faster than in urban and suburban areas of the state. However, the number of workers is not increasing in these areas making it difficult for long term care facilities to find enough qualified caregivers and medical staff. Today, there are more than 54,000 direct caregivers working in Oregon. The need for caregivers is projected to increase substantially in the years ahead as Oregon’s population grows older. By the year 2028, the number of personal care workers will grow by 28%, while home health aides will grow by 29%. 20 The number of registered nurses working in Oregon will also grow by as much as 15%. As this shortage of skilled workers grows, so does the need for innovative solutions to make sure these jobs are well-promoted in educational settings and paths to long-lasting career opportunities in long term care are available.
