Lake District Hospital  SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM RECEIVED A 2017 WESTERN REGION SUMMER SUNSHINE AWARD Lake District Hospital’s Outback Strong Summer Lunch program has received a 2017Western Region Summer Sunshine Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Outback Strong Lunch Program is a part of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a USDA program that ensures low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Lake Health District sponsored the SFSP for the first time in 2017. The Outback Strong Summer Lunch Program served 2,373 meals in 44 days. It included five lunch sites and was supported by two grants, paid health district staff, and more than 80 volunteers. That community support was praised statewide and is the reason Lake Health District received the award for Excellence in Community Partnerships. The USDA’s Western Region covers Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada, Alaska, Arizona, and Hawaii. The Summer Sunshine Awards “recognize the outstanding achievements of individuals and groups” who serve children healthy meals during the summer, according to an award letter from the program. Lake Health District will offer the Outback Strong Summer Lunch Program again in 2018.
