nmdental.org 31 Dr. Franklin Zecca was born in Gallup on April 11, 1937. He passed away in Phoenix, AZ on November 27, 2020. Dr. Zecca worked for 50 years as a General Dentist in Gallup, NM, a com- munity that he and his family had been a part of for several years. Franklin’s father, Guido Zecca, had become a prominent businessman and politician. Guido Zecca was from Cosco, Italy and during World War I, he had made a brief stop in Gallup and fell in love with the area. That is how the Zecca family came to live in Gallup, NM. Interestingly, Dr. Zecca’s father is most known for his promotion of boxing. For 20 years his father promoted boxing matches at the Old Kitchen Opera House. The love for Gallup did not stop with Mr. Guido Zecca, but it was passed on to his sons Franklin, Joe, and Guido Jr. After graduating from Gallup Cathedral High in 1955, Franklin was trying to figure out what type of career he was interested in and had taken some pre- dental classes at Regis College. He was also interested in law and engineering. As he was still trying to make a choice in career, he helped his brother, Joe, manage the American Bar. It was one fateful day that a Public Health Service Dentist came in and took the time to chat with Franklin. He expressed how much he enjoyed dentistry and it was this encounter that convinced Dr. Zecca to become a dentist.
