NMDA Journal Winter 2019-20

nmdental.org 21 With NMDOH support, NMDA is also complet- ing educational videos around managing pain safely, including prescribing best practices, and better understanding of dependence and addiction. These videos will be available to all NM dentists and dental staff and will qualify for CME credit upon completion of a post test. In addition to promoting improved under- standing of pain as a clinical symptom and awareness of alternatives to opioid prescrib- ing for pain, these videos emphasize that substance misuse and addiction are not only important issues for patient care, they also directly impact dentists and dental staff, their families, and their communities. Note: NMDOH’s Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention Program also supports other kinds of provider training, including academic detailing, a one-on-one approach which can help medical professionals review and tailor evidence-based practices around pain management, safer prescribing, and other topics to their own clinical practice. Dentists interested in finding out more about academic detailing opportunities should contact Chris Trujillo, NMDOH, at (505) 476-3719.
