NMDA Journal Fall 2018

30 New Mexico Dental Journal, Fall 2018 NMBDHC REPORT A Message From The New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care By L. Paul Balderamos, DDS, MS, FACP— Vice-Chairman New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care Great News. Because you are a member of the NMDA, you get a “reach out” communication from your NMBDHC through the NMDA Journa l. You get a clear idea of what the NMBDHC is considering and what the NMBDHC is ruling on. This is a great insight into what is relevant in New Mexico.  • NMBDHC communication is now electronic. Please make sure that your current email address is on file with the Board. Please check your email, spam, and trash accounts for communication. Check your Certificates and Permits for their expiration dates. File your renewal applications in a timely fashion with appropriate fees.  • The Board recognizes that the use of botulinum toxin (Botox and others) is within the scope of a licensed NM dentist for the oral and maxillofacial regions. There has been a recent question of whether a dentist can treat patients with migraine headaches with Botox. The Board is of the opinion that the following suggestions act as guidelines for dentists treating these conditions: 1. Migraine headaches and other closely related headache conditions must be diagnosed by a physician, as a dentist cannot specifically diagnose these disorders. 2. The use of Botox by a dentist to treat migraines should be in close collaboration with their medical colleagues. 3. Screening for Obstructive Sleep Apnea must be done by a physician before the use of Botox. 4. Dentists must be trained in the use of Botox as defined by Rules: 16.5.14.  • The change-over to the new levels of anesthesia and dental sedation is going well. Please contact the Board for the necessary forms and Affidavit with regard to the level of permit you qualify for and under which you intend to practice. Make sure you have the necessary equipment and training for yourself and your support staff.  • The NMBDHC is undertaking a review and revision of the rules and regulations regarding advertising . As a starting point we have the rules of our neighbor State of Colorado posted on our NMBDHC website for review. We will be having public meetings and all interested persons and parties will be given time for input and comment. Stay tuned for further developments .
