9 nmdental.org State of the Workforce | continued 2018 continued on next page Your guide to the team X X XXX THE TEAM APPROACH What they do Training and testing Dental Laboratory Technicians Fabricate replacement teeth and prostheses Apprentice and/or school-based programs (military) Uncertified Dental Assistants Chairside assistance, sterilization, administrative Apprentice or school-based programs (military) Dental Assistants with additional certifications In addition to above, they may be certified to take radiographs, polish teeth, apply topical fluoride, sealants Apprentice or school-based program, pass written and clinical skills testing (Board or Dental Assisting National Board [DANB]) Certified Dental Assistants Trained and certified in all of the above Generally school-based program (may or may not be CODA accredited) and pass written and clinical comprehensive testing via DANB Expanded Function Dental Assistants In addition to the above, may perform multiple restorative procedures on teeth prepared by a dentist Complete a school-based program accredited by CODA, pass clinical examination administered by the Western Regional Examination Board (WREB) Community Dental Health Coordinators Patient/Community education, care facilitation, limited preventive and palliative care Complete a school-based program. May be co-certified as dental assistant, or co-licensed as community health worker or dental hygienist Dental Hygienists Preventive and periodontal care, patient education Associates, bachelors, or masters’ degree from CODA accredited program and comprehensive test administered by WREB Dental Hygienists with additional certifications Administer local anesthesia School-based program and skills-based test administered by WREB Dental Hygienists certified for collaborative practice Practice in unsupervised settings under collaborative agreement with dentist Supervised practice experience and board- approved collaborative agreement General Dentists Full scope of dental procedures including preventive, restorative, and surgical services Undergraduate bachelors degree (or predental equivalent) and four-year DDS or DMD from CODA accredited dental school Dentists with special interest areas in general dentistry Licensed general dentists with additional training in areas of limited interest like esthetics, implants, anesthesiology, or temporomandibular disorder Post-graduate educational programs and residency programs, may or may not be CODA accredited Dentists with a recognized specialty Practice limited to one of seven ADA recognized specialties Post-graduate residencies of 2–7 years in CODA accredited programs
