Life is full of challenges, and for some, they begin at birth.
The articles presented in this issue bring new insight to a few of these special
challenges and research being done locally to assist both children and their families.
“Hearing Loss in Infants and Children,” by
The Bulletin
’s feature columnist
Dr. Barbara Gehrett, addresses early detection and treatment of hearing loss in
newborns.
In addition, Dr. Gehrett has written an article about ACEs—Adverse Childhood
Events—which can impact children and adults for many years after they occur.
Our feature articles also include an examination of hip dysplasia in infants,
summarizing current tests and treatment options.
“Safe Sleeping” offers an overview of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and
Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID) in King County, including risk factors
and precautions for parents and caretakers of newborns.
“Insights from the Baby Brain” reviews findings from the University of Washington’s
Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences that explore infants’ capacity for learning.
In our historical article, Dr. Fillmore Buckner writes about Georg Wilhelm Steller,
a physician and naturalist who made many remarkable contributions to the study
of natural history in the Northwest.
Finally, we share photographs and memories from the King County Medical
Society’s 125th Anniversary Reception, held May 12, 2016. Thank you to everyone
who attended and to all of our members for helping the society succeed for so
many decades!
I hope you find the articles in this issue informative, interesting, and thought
