All Rights Reserved MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Michael Pace General Manager InterContinental Mark Hopkins CHLA Chair At the start of each new year, it’s common to reflect on the prior year, to take stock, set goals and establish priorities. We often vow to make improvements, to better ourselves in some way. As we take our first steps into 2019, I encourage everyone to consider this new year’s resolution: embrace sustainability. We are in a position, in our industry, to make positive changes that not only protect our environment, but that benefit our guests, employees, and communities. Many CHLA members have demonstrated leadership in sustainability and have been recognized as a CHLA Star of the Industry by winning a Good Earthkeeping Award: • Terranea Resort collaborates with Chefs to End Hunger, a non-profit organization that redistributes prepared food that would normally go to waste in hotels, restaurants, and other food service operations to local food agencies serving meals to those in need. • The Portola Hotel’s on-site brewery, Peter B’s Brewpub donates spent grain to local cattle ranchers—diverting approximately one ton of grain per week from landfills. • Fairmont San Francisco hosts four beehives in its onsite culinary garden to help support the bee population. The garden is home to approximately 200,000 bees which produce around 600 pounds of honey per year for the hotel’s dining outlets. Properties across California are integrating elements of sustainability into their hotel operations, building and design. Another CHLA member, Hyatt Regency Sacramento, utilizes solar sheeting on its south-facing windows and low-emissivity glass. The Argonaut uses electrochemically activated cleaning and sanitizing solutions in place of traditional cleaners. At InterContinental Mark Hopkins, we take energy efficiency and waste diversion seriously as well. Our recycling practices and other eco-friendly programs save natural resources, reduce air and water pollution, cost of waste and cost of energy. As the largest hotel in San Francisco to be named a San Francisco Green Business, we continuously challenge ourselves to improve our processes and incorporate sustainable practices throughout our property, while increasing profitability every step of the way. With a growing focus on the environment and conservation, we will see a continued rise in green-minded hotel guests seeking carbon offsets, waste management and reductions in energy usage—especially here in California. We should consider additional ways for guests to participate in these efforts and effectively communicate our green programs to encourage even more innovation. Our efforts in this venture will not go unnoticed and, with hope, will further enhance eco- friendly practices across the nation. I’m proud to be a part of our industry as we doggedly pursue all sustainable options and make the most of this opportunity to stand out as leaders in the green movement. While new year’s resolutions are easy to make and often difficult to keep, I hope we can all commit to embracing sustainability. 
