All Rights Reserved MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As you all know, the hotel and lodging industry is a 24 hour a day business. At the property level, everything must function correctly, which is why properly trained and resourced maintenance and engineering efforts are vital to the success of your business. Whether it’s a broken door handle or a faulty air conditioner, these problems must be addressed. In addition to guest satisfaction, safety is most often a factor in improving and maintaining your property—and safety shouldn’t ever be overlooked. Properly maintaining a hotel will lead to optimal operating performance and help preserve a property’s reputation with its guests. As a nudge to keep our guests safe, California’s lodging properties must also follow a strict code of building, health and fire safety guidelines that help ensure that when a guest stays at any property, there are standards that are met and there’s certain comfort in that for our guests. One of the issues of these safety guidelines is that not all hotels and inns fully understand and are aware of the requirements and the penalties that can apply if they are violated. This is especially true in relation to ADA compliance, where complicated national and state regulations make it difficult to know if your property is in compliance. It is strongly recommended that you consider the services of a licensed certified access specialist who can inspect a property for compliance with applicable state and federal construction-related accessibility standards, further protecting you from costly drive-by lawsuits. In addition, as hotels get more technologically innovative, the maintenance and engineering departments will play an ever-larger role in making sure that hotel operations run smoothly. To facilitate these operations, CH&LA (of course) has many members that offer maintenance and engineering products and services that can save your property money and help improve operations. Whether you need these services immediately or not, I encourage you to peruse the listings in the CH&LA Marketplace toward the back of this and every California Lodging News magazine issue. These companies have chosen to support CH&LA—please allow them the chance to earn your business. I hope that this issue of California Lodging News will help shine a light on maintenance and engineering—we can’t do it without them.  Lynn Mohrfeld CH&LA President & CEO
