CHLA Spring 2014

HOTELIER PROFILE—CARL DOUGHTY CH&LA: And the biggest challenges? DOUGHTY: Every day the hospitality business changes, some changes we are aware of and some we are not. So, the challenge becomes to try to figure out what was the change we should have known about. We then must learn quickly to meet these new challenges and take advantage of any new methods or technologies available to succeed. CH&LA: When you vacation what are a few of your favorite places to visit? DOUGHTY: Since Laurenne and I are 24/7 hotel people, if we stay somewhere, we prefer it not to be in a traditional hotel. A yurt in the middle of nowhere would be just fine. Dreaming big it would be a thatch hut over the water in BoraBora. Who wouldn’t like that one? CH&LA: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? DOUGHTY: I would like to be spending more free time with Laurenne, my wife, my two expensively educated daughters, Elizabeth and Michelle, and our friends at our home in La Jolla. A good time there is watching the sunsets at Windansea beach with the gang at the “penalty box,” listening to old surfers embellish their past exploits. (Very similar to listening to “the fish that got away” stories.) CH&LA: How would you describe the value you receive from your CH&LA membership? DOUGHTY: CH&LA is the only hospitality industry organization in California that is our “go to” source of support in the areas of business law, employment law, equipment and supply vendor references. These are true aids to us every day. However, I believe the most important value received from CH&LA membership is that they provide our collective voice before the lawmakers and policy makers of the State of California. The lobbying efforts of CH&LA have, over the years, saved millions if not billions of dollars in hotel operating costs by influencing our lawmakers to be reasonable and supportive in their regulation of our industry.  20 California Hotel & Lodging Association SPRIng 2014 Sheraton •• Western Oak,Lake Oceanfront Hotel Hotel Downtown Sheraton Hotel Vagabond Los Hollywood Sheraton • Laguna Inn—Anaheim Ontario Oakhurst Western Country Los Burlingame • Fairfield Hyatt Hilton Sierra Alameda Suites—• Suites—
