CARL DOUGHTY Maneuvers Through the Franchise Industry Carl Doughty, a long time CH&LA member, has been the president and co-owner of Pacific Plaza Hotels, Inc. since March of 1999. Carl currently holds ownership in several lodging and commercial properties, including the Best Western Plus Garden Court Inn in Fremont, the Best Western Plus Garden Inn in Santa Rosa, and the Best Western Plus Sutter House in Sacramento. Carl is a voting member of Best Western International, Inc., is a former director for the California Hotel & Lodging Association and a current member of CH&LA’s Audit & Investment Committe. With Carl’s thirty plus years of expertise with the franchise and hotel management industry, he was an obvious hotelier to profile in this issue. CH&LA: How did you get started in the hotel franchise industry? DOUGHTY: In 1979, I was working at an international certified public accounting firm and during my morning review of the Wall Street Journal one of the partners of the firm asked if I had time to do an analysis for one of his clients. I agreed to work on this project and was off to meet the client, who ended up being Buzz Gibb and Tracy Wahrlich. Little did I realize that my life would change forever from that meeting! I joined Buzz and Tracy in 1980 at Thunderbird Properties, Inc. the predecessor of Pacific Plaza Hotels and have been here ever since. Tracy and I bought Buzz’s share of the management company years ago; which we renamed Pacific Plaza Hotels, Inc. CH&LA: How did you choose to franchise with Best Western? DOUGHTY: Buzz Gibb was an early franchise member of Best Western and, based on his experience, we continued primarily with this brand as we acquired new hotels. CH&LA: Do you both manage and own hotels? DOUGHTY: Yes, I own hotel properties personally and our company Pacific Plaza Hotels, Inc. also manages for third party owners.  SPRinG 2014 California Hotel & L Lodging Associatition 17
