ATSSA Signal March/April 2019

American Traffic Safety Services Association 8 ATSSA News Meet the newest 2019 ATSSA boardmembers Longstanding association members bring expertise and industry knowledge to help advance roadway safety Dedicated members of the roadway safety industry are the heart of ATSSA. These individuals work tirelessly to up- hold the association’s commitment to advancing roadway safety and moving Toward Zero Deaths on our nation’s roadways. ATSSA’s Board of Directors are largely involved with setting the tone of the association’s strategic ob- jectives and efforts. This year’s newest members include Cecil Brown, Kevin Shelton, and Larry Boise. Brown, who is the national sales and marketing manager for Hill & Smith Inc., has been in the roadway safety industry and a member of ATSSA for nine years. His first leadership roles included serv- ing as treasurer for the Ohio Chapter of ATSSA and after serving as chapter pres- ident. He later served as the chair of the Chapter President’s Council. “Taking on a leadership role afforded me the opportunity to meet so many peo- ple and learn about how their companies contribute to the improvement of trans- portation safety across the country,” said Brown. “I was able to contribute to my local chapter, the association as a whole, and become more involved in the road- way safety community inmy home state.” Brown said his primary goals will be to continue to support ATSSA’s chapter net- work and to contribute to ATSSA’s prog- ress by helping to identify opportunities for growth and improvement, specifi- cally as it relates to technology and the ever-evolving transportation system. Kevin Shelton, owner and company es- timator of C-Hawkk Construction Inc., has been in the roadway industry for nearly 30 years and has been associated with ATSSA for more than 20 years. He has served on the board of the Heart of America Chapter of ATSSA for 15 years. Shelton said the relationships he has made by being an active member are invaluable. “I began to see the value of being in the Heart of America chaptermore andmore once I started attending the local meet- ings with the Kansas Department of Transportation,” said Shelton. “The value of being able to communicate in a non-threatening atmosphere with those making the decisions that affected my business I saw as a valuable tool. As I got to know the participants more, I could see where working with them to accom- plish the goals we both wanted was a great idea.” In his new role, Shelton said he hopes to bring some of the leadership ideas and lessons from his Heart of America term to the board. He also hopes to share the value of being amember and how to use and access ATSSA and local chapter partnerships. President & CEO of Franklin Paint Com- pany, Inc., Larry Boise has been a mem- ber of ATSSA for nearly a decade and has about 15 years of experience in the road- way safety industry. He is a member of the Pavement Marking Committee and has served on both the Operating Com- mittee and the Government Relations Committee, of which he was vice chair. “There are many benefits to being an ATSSA member. I’m a firm believer in staying ahead—it’s better to knowwhat’s happening and being a part of making it happen than it is to wait for new infor- mation, advancements, or change to come at you,” said Boise. “If you can in- fluence it a couple years in advance then it helps mitigate surprises.” Boise said he hopes to help steer ATSSA into the future. With Connected Auton- omous Vehicles (CAVs) continuing to emerge on our nation’s roadways, ATSSA will need to work with auto manufactur- ers and other public agencies to ensure U.S. roadways and infrastructure ade- quately accommodate these vehicles and are safe for all roadway users. Additionally, Boise said there are some issues ATSSA will have to address, such as having proper standards for different devices andproducts.WhileATSSAdoesn’t set the standards, the association’s voice is part of setting the direction for guide- lines and regulations.
