American Traffic Safety Services Association 32 The Foundation Providing educational opportunities for loved ones The Foundation seeks to change lives through higher education scholarships Each year, The Foundation provides educational scholarships to the depen- dents of roadwayworkerswhohave been killed or permanently disabled in work zone incedents through the Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship. In 2018, eight students from around the country were selected as scholarship recipients. Each scholarship is worth up to $10,000 and recipients can receive an additional $1,000 as the recipient of the Chuck Bai- ley Memorial Scholarship for their com- mitment to volunteerism. The scholar- ships are funded in large part through the support of ATSSAmembers and go a long way in supporting the educational goals of loved ones of those impacted by work zone crashes. “We are extremely proud of all of the Road- way Worker Memorial Scholarship recip- ients for overcoming adversity after suffering through the tragic loss of a loved one, as well as for working hard to pursue post-high school education. All of The Foundation’s program participants are incredibly inspiring,” said former Foun- dation President TomWood. The Foundation staff continues to stay in touch with previous scholarship recipi- ents, according to Wood. “The Foundation believes the scholarships are just one of many ways we can sup- port the loved ones of those killed or in- jured inwork zones,”Wood said. “It is such anhonor tobeable toprovideany amount of support to help them progress.” Previous recipient Andrea Pair is a phar- macy student at the Harding University College of Pharmacy. She said she first learned about ATSSA and The Foundation in high school when she was asked to at- tenda ceremonywhere theNationalWork Zone Memorial was displayed, honoring her father and other roadway workers killed in work zone crashes. “Aside from receiving financial support from the scholarship, I’ve met so many incredible people who have supported me,” Pair said. “I come froma smaller fam- ily and from a family that didn’t attend college, so in high school it was hard to seemyself going as far as I have. I always dreamed about going far withmy educa- tion, but I never had anyone to talk to about how to get there. Through ATSSA, I met those people and so many other people in the same circumstances I was. Meeting peoplewho still strive to succeed despite their circumstances was amazing and life changing.” The 2019 deadline to submit applications for the Roadway Worker Memorial Schol- arship is Feb. 15, 2019. Apply for a Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship This competitive program offers financial assistance for post-high school education to dependents of roadway workers killed or permanently disabled in roadway work zones, which helps ensure that their dependents’ academic dreams continue. Scholarships are valued up to $10,000. Applicants with a strong commitment to volunteerism may apply to receive an additional $1,000 Chuck Bailey scholarship.
