ATSSA Signal Jan/Feb 2019

American Traffic Safety Services Association 20 Innovation & New Programs ATSSA case studies: Pedestrians, cyclists & temporary traffic control As part of ATSSA’s commitment to advancing roadway safety, the association releases case studies on the top issues the roadway safety infrastructure industry is facing. ATSSA will soon be releasing two new case studies. The first focuses on traffic control devices as they relate to improving pedestrian and bicycle safety at signalized intersections. Fatality rates are climbing for pedestrians and cyclists on our nation’s roadways. One hotspot for these fatal accidents is at signalized intersections. This case study book will highlight the infrastructure counter- measures that have been proven to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians at these intersections. The second case study focuses on temporary traffic control methods to improve safety at special events such as concerts, sporting events, political rallies, and others. Special events are a unique traffic control situation that mu- nicipalities across the country deal with on a semi-regular basis. These special events require an extra level of safety precautions due to the number of additional vulnerable road users attending the events. An apparent lack of proper traffic control expertise in managing these events provides a space where ATSSA members can play a role in im- proving safety. An ATSSA member benefit, case studies are due to ship to member companies the beginning of February. For more information, contact Brian Watson at brian.watson@atssa.com .
