ATSSA Signal Nov/Dec 2018

American Traffic Safety Services Association 30 Member Company & Agency News ATSSA’s Employee Immersion Pro- gram provides association staff with op- portunities to enrich their knowledge of the roadway safety industry and learn more about the important work road- way safety infrastructure companies do every day. These visits also help ATSSA staff to better understand how these member companies operate daily, so they can provide better service. ATSSA Associate Director of Member Engagement Gail Remy recently visited the Guardway Corporation in Charlotte, North Carolina on an immersion visit. Guardway Corporation is a work zone traffic equipment corporation, founded in 1968 by John Youngblood. Guardway provides a complete inventory of traffic control materials, safety equipment, signs and sign accessories, as well as customized signs and banners. “My immersion experience provided me with an opportunity to shadow Guard- way CorporationManaging Director Ben Capel and his staff to gain insight and hands on experience, which helped me develop a deeper knowledge and un- derstanding of the company’s role in the roadway safety infrastructure industry,” Remy said. Remy shared more about her experi- ence at the facility. “After a tour of the facility it was time to get hands on, as- sisting with first of several rush jobs,” Remy said. “I participated in every stage of completing orders in the company’s temporary traffic control and regulato- ry signs portfolio. I also visited an active work site to ensure directional signs were properly placed, to guide drivers and pedestrians.” While most of Guardway’s clients are in the North Carolina community, the com- pany receives requests from across the United States. “My immersion experience was extreme- ly valuable,” Remy said. “It provided a detailed, real world, nine-to-five expe- rience in how things get done within a company in the roadway safety infra- structure industry. I walked away with a deeper understanding of the skills and details required by Guardway’s workers, and the numerous demands our mem- bers tackle each day. The work our mem- bers do is a crucial component in keep- ing individuals safe on our nation’s roadways.” To host an ATSSA staff member for the associa- tion’s Employee Immersion Program or to find out more information, email ATSSA Director of New Programs Brian Watson at brian.watson@ atssa.com .
