California Chapter The California ATSSA (CAL-ATSSA) chapter gathered in Sacramento, California on April 28, 2018 for the Caltrans Workers Memorial at the state capitol, with a chapter meeting following at Cafeteria 15L restaurant. The chapter sponsored the Caltrans event by bringing The Foundation Memorial on site for display during the ceremony. Senator Josh Newman attended the chapter meeting and provided an update on the status of California’s major transportation funding package, Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), which passed last year. SB 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, was signed into law; however, there is an initiative in 2018 to repeal SB 1. This legislative package invests $54 billion over the next decade to fix roads, freeways and bridges in communities across California and puts more dollars to- ward transit and safety. Senator Newman is an advocate for keeping SB 1 intact. Felipe Fuentes, The Apex Group and legislative advocate for the AssociatedGeneral Contractors of California, discussed Proposition 69, which ensures SB 1 funds can only be used for transportation im- provement purposes. It also prohibits the legislature from borrow- ing or diverting these revenues for non-transportation purposes. Fuentes encouraged the CAL-ATSSA chapter to sign onto a coalition, along with hundreds of other organization, to support Proposition 69 and oppose the efforts to repeal SB 1. The CAL-ATSSA chapter board and officer election results were an- nounced, introducing the following who will serve the chapter from 2018–2020: WilliamKearney, president; Craig Nielsen, president-elect; Kenneth Haley, treasurer/director; Scott Behm, director; David Graham, director; Ben Jeffrey, director; Carlo Sampson, director; and Rick Webb, director. Christy Myers-King and Tony Becker will also continue serving as immediate past president, and past pres- ident, respectively. The chapter thanked Christy Myers-King for her service as president during 2016–2018 and presented her with a plaque. The Caltrans Fallen Workers Memorial event was held at the California Department Transportation’s (CalTrans) headquarters in Sacramento in late April.
