Accomplishments Report 2018 13 Meetings & Conventions Other educational highlights included the Second Annual Roadway Safety Data Forum that analyzed the tools and tech- niques used to organize crash data, the process through which crash counter- measures are evaluated and assigned value, and how these data sets are used to prioritize road safety investment. Additionally, a subcontractor focus group addressed issueswithhiring and retaining qualified workers. Special events ATSSA’s Annual Convention&Traffic Expo continued tobeaprimenetworkingoppor- tunity for roadway safety professionals. This year there was heavy emphasis on connecting state transportation depart- ment officials with ATSSA member company representatives. Additionally, the association worked to include more opportunities to connect withATSSA staff, and toprovidemore exposure tomember products and services through events such as ATSSA’s New Products Rollout. Several new events were also held. The New Member Welcome event provided an opportunity for new ATSSAmembers to connect and learn about howmember- ship benefits iimpact their daily business operations. The Public Agency Official’s Reception was held for recipients of the 2018PublicAgencyScholarships to increase their networking and scholarshipbenefits. The Meet Your Chapter Liaison provided members the chance to ask questions about chapter involvement andmember- ship to ATSSA staff liaisons. The award goes to… On Jan. 28 three national awards were presented during the Opening General Session. James Crowley, vice president of new product development andmarketing for TrinityHighway, receivedATSSA’s Industry Achievement Award. This award is intended to recognizemembers of ATSSA who achieve distinction deemed worthy of special recognition. It is a means of acknowledging members who have attained eminence in the roadway safety industryand/orwhohavemade significant contributions to ATSSA. Chris Brookes, work zone delivery engineer from theMichigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), received ATSSA’s National Safety Award. For the past 28 years, ATSSA members have honored and recognized public officials with this award, which is presented to those who havemade extraordinary and significant contributions to the safety of our nation’s roadways. Kara Kenney, an investigative reporter for WRTV, the ABC affiliate in Indianapolis, Indiana, received ATSSA’s National Media Award. This awardwas developed through ATSSA’s Safety and Public Awareness Committee. Itprovidesstate transportation departments the opportunity to publicly recognize and honor a reporter, news organization, blogger, or freelancer who has been fair, balanced, and informative in reporting transportation issues. Three exhibitors received prestigious ATSSA InnovationAwards,whenthousands of attendees convened to view the latest products and services in the industry that help save lives on U.S. roadways. More than 3,000 people attended ATSSA’s 48th Annual Convention & Expo in 2018. The exhibit hall featured the latest innovations and company products in the roadway safety industry. FHWA Acting Administrator Brandye Hendrickson was one of the speakers at ATSSA’s Opening General Session, held during its annual convention and traffic expo.
