36 American Traffic Safety Services Association CHAPTER NEWS New hire spotlight: Gail Remy Find the gaps and grow. It’s a simple piece of advice that ATSSA’s Member Engagement Department’s newest hire, Gail Remy, has used to expand the membership base of several associations. With more than 15 years of experience building effective outreach programs, Remy now serves as chapter liaison to the Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Gulf Coast chapters. A proud Terp, she attended the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, while also working for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 1996, Remy began working at the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. She later took on a new position at the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). While at AAO-HNS, Remy said she recognized a gap for medical students and young professionals in the association’s membership, adding that as students transitioned to residents and then fellows, they received no information about advocacy or practice management before they became practicing physicians. “What I really enjoy is the opportunity to be innovative—to look to see what some of the gaps out there are,” Remy said. “What are some of the audiences that are out there that could potentially be our audiences?” Remy worked with her director at AAO-HNS to create a sector for residents and fellows. They worked with the majority of medical schools and with over 200 AAO-HNS chapters to tap into the new audience. The sector began with about 20 participants and grew to roughly 2,000 members, establishing its own government structure and board. After working at AAO-HNS, Remy became the center director of membership development with the National League of Cities (NLC), where she worked with city officials and worked to build a membership department.
