38 American Traffic Safety Services Association CHAPTER NEWS Arizona Chapter The Arizona Chapter met March 14 at the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), which is located at 206 S. 17th Ave., Phoenix, Arizona. A total of 31 people attended, including eight public agency individuals. Given that a quorum was not met for the meeting, the proposed bylaws amendments could not be brought forward for vote by the membership. It was announced that a written ballot would be sent out via email and all member companies would have the opportunity to vote. Highlights reported from the board meeting include: • There will be four director positions open on the Arizona- ATSSA Board. The nomination and election processes began in April. The new directors will be announced at the June meeting. • Greg Van Dine, of Centerline Supply West, was sponsored to represent the chapter at the 2017 ATSSA Legislative Briefing and Fly-In in early May. • The Arizona chapter of the Associated General Contractors, ADOT and Arizona-ATSSA are holding two pavement marking inspector training courses and the chapter has agreed to sponsor the luncheons held during these events. • The chapter has added Bob Wade as an instructor to assist in teaching chapter-sponsored courses, including Traffic Control Technician (TCT), Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS), Flagger Instructor Training (FIT) and Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMA). This will allow the chapter to meet members’ additional training needs in Arizona and help raise funds for the chapter. Featured speaker, Seth Chalmers, certified professional engineer for the Pima County Department of Transportation, provided an update on the minimum pavement marking retroreflectivity Supplemental Notice of Proposed Amendments (SNPA). Chalmers educated the chapter on the history of the rule, the new 2017 SNPA and encouraged members to submit comments to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) by May 4. John Ledbetter, chapter president from 2013 to 2015, was presented with a plaque to thank him for his service to the board. The next chapter meeting will be held on June 13 at the Maricopa County Department of Transportation Flood Control Building, 2801 W. Durango St., Phoenix, Arizona 85009. Chesapeake Chapter On March 2 the Chesapeake Chapter held a meeting at the Maryland State Highway Administration (MDSHA) District 5 Office, in Annapolis, Maryland. While only ten members were present, the meeting was very productive. After the welcome and introductions, the small group discussed numerous items including the review and approval of new chapter bylaws. The chapter has $3,911 in the bank and will be looking at ways to raise money for the chapter and The Foundation and is considering chapter scholarships. A scholarship subcommittee was created with members as follows: Chapter President Bret Martine, of Century Engineering; Steve Noel, of DPI; and Adam Weiser, of Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT). Anyone else interested in serving on the subcommittee should contact the chapter president. An idea about an industry-related scholarship was suggested and may be considered to connect with high school students interested in a roadway safety career. The president is interested in helping the chapter grow over the next 18 months and proposed a small annual assessment fee of $10. More discussion will take place on the topic. One idea involved letting members know that 50 percent of all future assessments could go to The Foundation. They also discussed refining a chapter mission statement to help the chapter move forward. The ATSSA database was discussed and members were reminded to let ATSSA HQ know when anything changes. The group is interested in showing others the value of ATSSA, the interpersonal relationships, and that the DOTs are key in succeeding.
