The ATSSA Training Department launched two new online courses at the beginning of this year. The Operation and Application of Truck- Mounted Attenuators (TMA) course and the Introduction to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) course. The online TMA course introduces trainees to the process of deployment, operation and removal of TMAs in roadway work zones. The four-hour training course applies workable concepts, applications and recommended practices to be used on active job sites. The online MUTCD course explores the purpose and necessity of standards and guidelines for traffic control devices. Trainees of the one- to two-hour course will examine MUTCD content and applicability to both public and private U.S. streets. According to ATSSA’s Director of Training, Jessica Scheyder, the introductory course to the MUTCD originally began as a webinar, which ATSSA partnered with the National Parking Association to hold in 2015. “The response from participants was so great that we decided to develop a course to help students increase their basic and fundamental knowledge of the MUTCD,” Scheyder said. “So far, the interest in this course has exceeded our expectations and we look forward to its continued success.” Additionally, Scheyder said the online course regarding TMAs was developed because of a high demand for widely applicable training. “Several of the nation’s top manufacturers and other ATSSA members were integral in the development of the course, working to encourage the proper application and operation of these devices,” Scheyder said. ATSSA’s Training Department also updated the national Traffic Control Technician (TCT) and Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) courses in March, with plans to update the state-specific course options over the next year as well as the Temporary Traffic Control Guide. The TCT and TCS courses were reviewed and rebranded with minor revisions made to content. The TTC Guide provides a condensed form of information contained in the 2009 MUTCD with regard to the installation, maintenance and the removal of traffic control devices in roadway work zones. The guide will be revised to reflect the updated course presentations. The new guide is projected to be available by the Fall 2017.  To sign up for the online Operation and Application of TMAs course or the online Introduction to the MUTCD course, visit www.atssa.com/training.
