Some hospitals offer three-month RN residency programs. Other hospitals may offer six-month residency training. For the few hospitals that could afford the clinical resources, they offer one-year RN training for the novice nurse. If medical residents get years of residency training to improve their clinical practice, then nurses should be given the time to go through a similar RN residency training to foster areas to grow as a novice nurse. Without this support, novice nurses would feel “rushed” and ill-pre- pared to care for the growing number of complex patients in the hospital. I am Mary Dickow MPA, FAAN, the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. My role will mainly focus on key strategy areas including leadership, interprofessional education and academic progression. As part of the focus on interprofessional education, I represent OADN on The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education. The two meetings I have attended so far have focused on faculty devel- opment and curriculum redesign efforts to increase interdisciplinary opportunities. In addition, my current role as faculty with the Master of Science in Health Administration and Interprofessional Leadership at UCSF deepens what I can contribute to ADN programs moving forward. I have worked with a variety of leadership development programs including serving as deputy director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellows program and with physician and pharmacy leadership programs at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Those experiences have provided a rich set of skills and knowledge base that I bring to OADN and look forward to devel- oping additional opportunities with our ADN partners. It is an honor and privilege to serve with colleagues in our state and beyond to advance the mission of our organizations and be a part of vital efforts to advance the future of our nation’s nursing workforce. NEPIN (nepincollaborative.org ) is committed to raising the voice for a diverse workforce to improve the health of all communities that our ADN schools touch. We have some unique challenges in California.
