In a changing health care system, it is critical to stay focused on the journey from ADN degree to BSN and higher. Collaborative models exist across the state and the Academic Progression in Nursing partnership project at California State University Los Angeles engaged 13 community colleges and has been sustained post grant funding with over 240 students graduating from the program. Last fall during the joint meeting between the California Organization of Associate Degree Nursing programs and California Colleges of Nursing programs Deans and Directors were provided insight about successful statewide models in Arizona and Kansas that provide nursing students the opportunity to concurrently enroll and earn a BSN within a semester of graduating from their ADN programs. Mary Dickow MPA, FAAN, Statewide Director, California Action Coalition; Program Director, HealthImpact ADN Corner such best practices and learning from colleagues in other states, California will be piloting the first true concurrent enrollment program in Fall 2019. A partnership that has been established between Riverside City College (RCC) and California State University San Bernardino and California State University Fullerton will provide up to 80 students per year with the opportunity to receive their BSNs within six months of completion of their ADN coursework. “This program, which we hope to be implemented throughout California over the next few years, has the potential to increase the number of BSN graduates in the state by 175%!” says Sandy Baker, Dean of Nursing at RCC. “The concurrent enrollment program model provides a quality degree that is accessible and affordable for the diverse citizens of California, without their having to incur excessive amounts of student debt.” ❱ Continued from page 10
