H I S T O R I C IT’S ALWAYS A GOOD THING WHEN A PAVEMENT EXCEEDS ITS DESIGN LIFE, but when the pavement does so by a factor of 3 or more, it’s nothing short of remarkable. Such is the case with two exceptionally durable sections of Arkansas Highway 296 (formerly US 67) in Arkansas. Almost 90 years after it was first built, the original concrete pavement for a 5.5-mile section, as well as another 12-mile section constructed 64 years ago, are still in service. The original concrete pavement placed on what is nowHwy 296, Mandeville, is the longest and most intact portion still in service. This highway section was the main automobile route in that part of Miller County from 1929 until 1954, when the current US 67 was built adjacent to it. This section was recognized and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. continues on page 12 » Arkansas Pavements Exceed Design Lives… and Keep on Working!
