Concrete Pavement Progress www.acpa.org 4 Bill Davenport American Concrete Pavement Association bdavenport@acpa.org  | 847.423.8703 WE OFTEN TALK ABOUT THE VERSATILITY of concrete pavements, and in this issue, we proudly present three shining examples of projects where concrete overlay technology, “traditional” concrete construction, and the evolving technology of roller compacted concrete were used. Our first project story is about a thin concrete overlay on SR 9 in Grant County, Indiana. This project spans across a rural area and suburban area, and while the project presented some challenges during construction, the finished roadway has improved ride quality and offers a long-lasting pavement for drivers and residents. Best of all, the cost was lower than the asphalt alternative. The next case history focuses on two sections of Highway 296 in Arkansas. This exceptional pavement features two long-life sections that far exceeded their original design lives. It’s no surprise when and why durable concrete is used for highways, but few people would have expected to see the loads and volume of traffic these concrete sections are still carrying today. In Alabama, officials were challenged to address a deteriorating asphalt pave- ment on a heavily used diamond interchange on I-59/20.The solution originally was to build up the asphalt roadway, but the final decision was to use roller compacted concrete that’s expected to stand up to trucks and other traffic on this busy interchange. Beginning with this issue, we are happy to welcomeThomas Olson as a regular contributor to Concrete Pavement Progress . Tom is the founding partner of Olson Construction Law, and he is well known to many ACPA members for his talks at concrete pavement industry events, as well as other transportation construction groups. In this issue, he provides some interesting and useful information about concrete cracking … and what contractors and agencies should know about whether to repair cracks. As always, we welcome your comments, questions, and suggestions for project stories in your area. You can reach us at education@acpa.org or on Twitter (#paveconcrete).
